The country's major natural resource is gas. So far thirteen gas fields have been discovered. Total reserve is estimated around 0.31 trillion cubic metres.
Oil has recently been discovered at Sylhet, the reserve and deliverability of which is being estimated.
In the northwestern part huge deposits of limestone and hardrock have been discovered at Bogra and Dinajpur respectively. Coal deposits have been found at Jamalganj at a depth of 980m. In the western part at Barapukuria bituminous coal has recently been discovered at a depth of 130m. Peat deposits are available at Khulna, Faridpur and some other southern areas. Plans are underway to mine coal, limestone and hardrock. |
