Chittagong

 
 

Chittagong is the second largest city in Bangladesh. It is the Commercial Capital City of Bangladesh. The surrounding mountains and rivers make the city attractive. Karnaphuli River falls in Chittagong. The largest land port of the country, "Chittagong Port", situated in Chittagong. That's why Chittagong is the city for export and import. Most of the large industries of Bangladesh are situated in Chittagong.

Chittagong is bounded by Feni district and Tripura (Indian state) on the north, Cox's Bazar district on the south, Bandarban, Rangamati and Khagrachhari districts on the east and Noakhali district and the Bay of Bengal on the west. 

Chittagong district consists of one city corporation, seven municipalities, six thanas, 20 upazilas, 197 union parishads and 1,319 villages. The upazilas are Anwara, Banshkhali, Boalkhali, Chandanaish, Fatikchhari, Hathazari, Lohagara, Mirsharai, Patiya, Rangunia, Raozan, Sandwip, Satkania and Sitakunda. The thanas are Chandgaon, Bandar thana (Chittagong port) Double Mooring, Kotwali, Pahartali and Panchlaish.

Archaeological heritage and relics Bronze statues (8th and 9th centuries, in Anwara upazila), Fakira Mosque (Hathazari), Musa Khan Mosque (1658), Kura Katni Mosque (1806), Kala Mosque (16th century), Chhuti Khan Mosque (Mirsharai), Kadam Mobarak Mosque (1719), Andar Killah Mosque, Wali Khan Mosque (1790), Badar Awlia Dargah, Bakshi Hamid Mosque of Banshkhali (1568), Chittagong Court Building (1893), Collegiate School, Ethnological Museum (1974).

Chittagong, is an ideal vacation spot. Its green hills and forests, its broad sandy beaches and its fine cool climate always attract the holiday-makers.  Described by the Chinese traveler poet, Huen Tsang (7th century A D) as "a sleeping beauty emerging from mists and water" and given the title of "Porto Grande" by the 16th both the descriptions even today. It combines the busy hum of an active seaport with the soothing quiet of a charming hill town. Chittagong is the country's chief port and is the main site for the establishment of heavy, medium and light industries.  Bangladesh's only steel mill and oil refinery are also located in Chittagong.

Places of interest in and around Chittagong include shrines of a dozen Muslim saints including Hazrat Byazid Bostami, Shahi Jame Mosque, Chandanpura Mosque, Hindu and Buddhist temples at Sitakunda, Cemetery of the 2nd world war heroes. Ethnological museum, Pahartoli Lake and Patenga and Fauzderhat beaches.

 

Foy's Lake

Foy's Lake is one of the popular tourist attractions in Chittagong. The lake is located amidst panoramic surroundings and is perfect for outings and picnics. The Foy'sLake is easily accessible. It is situated in the railway township of Pahartali, which is 8 kilometers away from the centre of the city of Chittagong. The place is thronged by thousands of visitors every week. The city of Chittagong is a wonderful place with green hills and forests, wide sandy beaches and its fine cool climate.

The Foy's Lake lies next to the Batali Hill, which is the highest hill in the Chittagong area. The area surrounding the Foy's Lake is simply picturesque and you will enjoy every bit of it. You can enjoy bird watching and other popular adventures beside the lake. There are some of the amusement rides near the lake where you can enjoy the rides. Enjoy camping near the lake with your families and friends.

The Batali Hill

The Batali Hill is the highest hill within the Chittagong Metropolitan area. It is situated in the Tiger Pass area of the city, only 1 km. from the Zero point. From the peak of the Batali Hill one can have a clear birds eye view of the city. a large number of people ascends at the top of the hill to fill their lungs with the fresh air, and to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the sunset in the Bay of Bangal. The tourists too have a glance of the mouth of the Karnafuli, a comprehensive portion of the Bay of Bangal. the Jetties of the Chittagong Sea port and a large portion of the city Chittagong.

Zia Museum

On the 30th may, 1981 the then president of Bangladesh General Ziaur Rahman was killed in the room on 4 of Chittagong Circuit House was built by the British ruler in ind9ia in residential building of Govt. high officials. Most of Zia's activities including his household goods are preserved in this museum. This house was also used by Pakistani army as a torturing center during the liberation war of Bangladesh. Pak army killed thousands of Banglees here through brutal torture, slaughter and shooting. This museum is situated near Chittagong Stadium at Kazir Dewri and 3km. northward of the Zero Point.

Patenga Sea Beach

It is a natural beauty spot. Here is the confluence of the river Karnaphuli and the Bay of Bengal. The beach has been protected from erosion by the bay with help of boulders.

There is the sandy beach from which one can find the waters of the bay. Visitors can have a view of the bay sitting on the heaps of boulders, walk along the sandy beach or can enjoy the illusive touch of the little of the setting sun. The beach is stressed up to 22km. It is 20 km. away from the Zero Point. The natural beauty of Patenga sea beach attracts thousands of visitors almost daily.
